Bernard de Marigny was a wealthy Louisiana French Creole planter and politician. At the age of fifteen, he inherited his father's plantation just below New Orleans city gates, east of Vieux Carré. In order to pay his gambling debts, he began subdividing his plantation in 1806 to develop Faubourg Marigny, the first New Orleans suburb.
